The Intoxilyzer 5000 has a digital readout and now that the machine is warmed up, it takes a little over twenty minutes for this to warm up, you can see that it’s calling for the date to be put in and displays other information on here. It scrolls across with information. This is the way the digital readout will look as the officer is looking at the screen. The officer knows from training that when the zero to the left of the decimal comes up, that means there's an adequate sample that has been collected. Instead of seeing that and stopping, when an adequate sample is there, they coax a person to keep blowing and blowing.

Now a test run on this machine shows a twenty to thirty five percent range in variability at some levels of being able to get an adequate reading and then still keep blowing and move it up twenty to thirty five percent more by continuing to blow until the person has no air left. The one thing about it is that no other type of forensic test, except an evidential breath test as used here, can have such variability in the results. The machines variability is such that the range of variability permitted on the machine is an astonishing percentage, which I'm going to go into in the next clip.
