The maker of the Intoxilyzer 5000 doesn't necessarily recommend this range of variability but the state of Georgia says that the two results received (remember there's two exhalations to equal one test) must come within a .020 of each other. Let's say that you're an under 21 driver and your first reading is a .039 and your second reading is a .019, those are within a .020 of each other. The .019 luckily is just under the .020 per se limit. This means that the acceptable range of variability, plus or minus .020, is actually 200% if the first reading is a .020 and you could have a .000 on the next reading and that's a good test.

You can also have .040 with a first reading of .020 and that’s a good test. That's a 100% range plus or minus. On a commercial driver with a .040, a 50% percent range is acceptable plus or minus. Even with an adult a 25% plus and 25% minus range is an acceptable range of variability. All of those would be good tests under Georgia law. That's not good enough for government work anyplace except on a breath machine.
