Attorney Willis demonstrated his courage and dedication to his clients by a 2003 contempt of court charge – to protect his client’s rights. He refused to allow a jury trial proceed until his expert witness, a renowned authority who was delayed by another trial, could arrive for court. Attorney Willis was faced with the decision of allowing his client to possibly be convicted if the case went to jury, or to jeopardize his own freedom to protect his client’s rights. He chose jail, where he served a four-day sentence, for protecting his client’s rights. After he was released, he returned to court with his expert witness and secured his client’s acquittal.
